Double World Rally Champion Marcus Gronholm has confirmed that he has had talks with organising parties within the BMW Mini WRC campaign.
Gronholm, who won 30 rallies, 61 podiums and took 542 stage wins, drove for Peugeot and Ford in his WRC career, which spanned seven years, retired from the WRC in 2007. He returned for a one-off drive with Prodrive in a Subaru Impreza S14 (rolling out of the rally). He made another appearance with Ford in this year's Swedish Rally.
"I might be interested [in coming back to the WRC]. I would have to think. It's tough for the whole season again, but maybe it would be good to be involved in testing and some rallies. Why not?" said Gronholm.
Gronholm said that his campaign would only consist of a handful of events and some testing, something of which Malcolm Wilson sees as being beneficial to the Mini WRT.
"Marcus would always be a welcome return to the championship, he's one of the sport's great characters and I think he could do a good job [for Mini] in that situation.” siad Wilson. “I think you could harness him into some testing and six rounds next year or something like that, but Marcus gets very frustrated when he's not winning.
"But, that sort of role, he could do very well. Half a dozen rallies and some test and development, he could definitely give them [Mini] a good steer and obviously he's still a very talented driver, but it's three years since he retired."
