Citroen Racing director Oliver Quesnel will allow Dani Sordo to fight for his first WRC win, just as soon as Sebastian Loeb and Citroen claim their respective championships.
Sordo joined Citroen's WRC squad after a dominant season in the J-WRC and although he finished second to Loeb on his Citroen WRC debut, he remained in the Frenchman's shadow ever since.
Sordo has always had the beating of Loeb at his home event, Rally Cataluna, but team-orders have intervened on numerous occasions. Sordo was allowed to challenge for the win on the 2008 Jordan Rally, after Loeb retired from the event. A poor road position ultimately denied him his first win, but it showed that he had the skill to win, even on gravel.
“I hope to see Seb be world champion the quickest possible and then I will say to all my drivers ‘do what you like and we will see’. I think that will be good for everybody, especially for Dani to be free [to fight for the win] in Spain. But apart from Seb, we also need the manufacturers’ title.”
Quesnel stated that Sordo has not been driving to his full potential in recent years.
“Of course Dani has not been driving at full pace. Everybody wants to be first in the Citroen team but nobody forgets why we are there and the objective of two titles. If they don’t forget then they can enjoy themselves and hopefully soon.” he said.
